What memories of food do have growing up?
My Mom and Dad were not the most adventurous cooks, or the most skillful. We were quite poor for the most part and we grew up on cheap meat and Kwik Save’s ‘No Frills’ food. I remember eating a lot of pigs’ tails and bread! So it was easy to turn vegan when I was a teenager, because I thought meat tasted disgusting. It wasn’t until I started eating meat about 10 years ago, that I realised what I had been missing!! Now I eat everything, except pork.
Have you got any favourite food bars/references in music?
Ghostface from ‘One’. “We want eight ravioli bags, two thirsty villains yelling bellyache”
Also gotta be the hook from Ice Cream by Method Man.
Give us one word to describe your knife skills.
We give you £10 to go to your local supermarket...what do you get to cook up?
Man I live by an Aldi so I could get a load of shit for that. Chunks of beef, carrots, celery, bay leaves, mixed herbs, stock, shallots and cook up a casserole. Simple. Eat it with some rice don.
You recently had the pleasure of spending some time away at her majesty’s request. Can you tell us about how your diet changed while inside and was there anything you could do to finesse a typical prison-dish?
‘Changed’ does not describe it. The difference between my diet on the out and my diet in there, is like... Out here it’s like a barrier reef, in there it’s like the surface of the moon.
Everything has to be cooked in the microwave if your landing is lucky enough to have one. Tinned tuna curry in the microwave is a speciality. I ate a lot of porridge with peanut butter and filled up on rice though man. To spruce up the prison drool though, mans got to have Encona hot pepper sauce on everything. You have to buy the plastic bottles on your canteen for top price. Everything is like corner shop prices and even less quality.
Foodbar challenge – can you finish these food bars from frequent collaborator & previous Big Rap Cookbook contributor, Sonnyjim, from his Purple Patch series?:
“kind of clumsy, son be leaving Columbo clues/
I bun a jumbo zoot, ….....” Nah I don't really listen to Sonnyjim.
Joke. I do but I don’t know them lyrics man. Ask me another!
Sleaze's "Easy Tasty Tagine"
A bulb of garlic (yes a bulb)
A little bit of fresh ginger
A lot of fresh coriander
Tbsp of cumin
Tsp of crushed cloves
500g chicken on the bone
200g lamb cut into small chunks
600 ml of stock
1 jar of passata
1 tbsp of honey
Cook the shallots, garlic, ginger, cumin, cloves and cinnamon stick in olive oil for 10 minutes until the shallots are soft.
Then throw the meat in and brown it all up.
Add in the stock, passata and honey and bring to boil.
Cover the pan. Let it simmer for 60 minutes.
Cook the rice.
When the meat is tender throw the coriander on top and eat with the rice, bread and yoghurt. Easy.
